Fuel Your Focus: The Power of Matcha for your Workday

Feeling foggy by midday? Matcha might be your new secret weapon. Packed with natural caffeine and calming L-theanine, this vibrant green tea helps boost focus, mood, and energy – without the crash. Matcha experts OMGTea share how a simple daily ritual can transform the way you work and feel.

Better Focus, Brighter Mood

In today’s fast-paced world, staying energised and focused can feel like a full-time job in itself. Whether you're a full-time worker, freelancer, remote worker, or part of a small startup team, the need for sustained productivity is real. Enter matcha – the vibrant green tea that’s been energising monks and warriors for centuries.

First, What’s Matcha?

Quality matcha is not just another type of green tea - it’s the champagne of green tea. Matcha comes from the same plant as all tea, Camellia sinensis, but the way it’s cultivated and processed is what makes it so special.

Tea leaves grown for matcha are shaded with bamboo three to four weeks before harvesting. This process boosts the nutrient levels to extremely high levels, including catechins—particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) - which help fight inflammation and oxidative stress.

The plants, which grow in near darkness, compensate for the lack of light by producing an intense amount of chlorophyll, contributing to the distinctive bright green colour of quality matcha. Shading the plants also increases the development of the amino acid L-theanine, which gives matcha its Zen-inducing qualities and its unique umami flavour.

How Matcha Can Help to Fuel Your Workday

Here’s how incorporating OMGTea Matcha into your daily routine can take your productivity up a notch.

Sustained Energy Without the Crash

You may already know that matcha has been consumed by Buddhist monks for hundreds of years to support meditation - but did you know that Samurai warriors also drank matcha? They discovered that it increased energy and mental focus. Before going into battle, Samurai would drink matcha to boost their energy, enhance physical performance, and prepare mentally.

Matcha contains less caffeine than other caffeinated drinks such as coffee. Each one-gram serving has approximately 34mg of caffeine, compared to 70–180mg in a cup of coffee. It’s also more easily tolerated by many people who find coffee makes them jittery - thanks to the other natural components in matcha that slow the release of caffeine into the body. It usually takes three to six hours for the caffeine to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

At OMGTea, we run a Matcha Challenge every January and February. It’s simple: participants drink one cup of matcha every day for 21 days and complete a survey at the end to reflect on their experience. This year, 90% of participants reported higher energy levels throughout the challenge, with feedback including,"I don't feel the energy crash like I do with coffee.""Didn't feel the same crashes as I do with coffee…matcha was a nice pick-me-up in the morning to start the day.""I just felt more active and focussed."

Enhanced Focus

The caffeine in quality matcha like OMGTea is enough to boost your energy, and its effects are enhanced by the presence of L-theanine. Unlike caffeine, L-theanine has a calming effect on the brain. It promotes the production of alpha waves, which induce a state of relaxed alertness. This creates a synergistic effect, caffeine delivers increased alertness, while L-theanine helps prevent the jitteriness and anxiety sometimes caused by caffeine. The result? Enhanced cognitive function, including improved focus and concentration - a key benefit highlighted by regular matcha drinkers.

In fact, 86% of our 2025 Matcha Challenge participants said they were able to concentrate better and work more effectively. Here’s what some of them had to say:

"I definitely noticed less brain fog when drinking matcha regularly.""I felt like I had increased focus, and I could zone in on my work fully!"

Mood Boosting

A little matcha can go a long way in keeping your spirits high - even on tough days. Quality matcha is rich in antioxidants and L-theanine, which may help reduce stress and support a positive mindset by encouraging the production of dopamine and serotonin—two brain chemicals that help reduce anxiety and enhance mood.

Again, this was also reflected in our Matcha Challenge results - 90% of participants said they noticed an improvement in their mood and overall well-being.

"I experienced a noticeable improvement in both my mood and overall well-being...I found myself feeling more centred and less prone to stress or irritability throughout the day.""Less groggy so less grumpy.""Being calm and relaxed while having energy is a great mood booster. I see matcha as mindfulness in a mug."
